Sehna Kurd
pile rug, 3'10" x 5'
|
#1
Sehna Kurd
pile rug, 3'10" x 5', from Sanandaj province in
southern Iranian Kurdistan, village weaving from about
1910. The complex overall design used here is more
common in workshop rugs and carpets from the city of
Sehna, but has much more spark, is less stiff, in this
village version. Finely woven, single wefted on a
cotton foundation, complete, and in very good
condition.

Tabriz,2' 8" x
4'
|
#2
Tabriz rug, probably from
a workshop in or very near the large Azarbayjani city
of the same name, 2' 8" x 4', from about 1920; the
field is decorated with a shrub form that looks like a
boteh, but actually more closely resembles motives
seen in old Kashmiri shawls. The main border on this
piece was commonly used on relatively early Bakshaish
export carpets, also from Azarbayjan. This rug is
complete and in very good condition. $1,500

Qarajeh,
35 x 410
|
#3
Qarajeh rug in
pushti format, from the village of Qarajeh
in East Azarbayjan in northwest Iran, 35 x
410, from about 1920. These small rugs
were popular in the village, and the format was
probably used earlier for cushion faces. This
well-drawn piece is notable for its madder red, an
uncommon color in rugs from Qarajeh, and the lack of
any dark blue. The medallion detail shows a vegetable
dyed chartreuse, which often appears in pre-1925 rugs
and carpets from East Azarbayjan, but not later on.
Perfect condition, no repairs.

|
#4
Kashan garden rug,
workshop weaving from the lovely Qajar city of Kashan
in western Iran, from about 1925, 1' 10" x 2' 11".
Small Kashans with trees and birds are uncommon on red
fields, more so on ivory. This piece is in unworn
condition. There is red abrash through the middle of
the rug, seen mainly in the borders.

Qarajeh rug in
pushti format, from the village of Qarajeh
in East Azarbayjan in northwest Iran, 33 x

probably used earlier for cushion faces. They almost
never have yellow fields, as this one does. Complete,
unusual design, and in very good condition; one end
guard border well rewoven.
Rug is 3'3" x

Malayer, 32 x
65
|
#7
Malayer rug,
32 x 65, village weaving from
an area south of Hamadan, from about 1900 or a bit
earlier. This piece, with its riff on the overall
Herati design, is a contemporary of
so-called Sarouk Farahan carpets. Single-wefted,
symmetric knots. The main border form did not get used
in later rugs from the area. In good condition,
minimal repairs, complete.

Tafresh dozar,
43 x 6
|
#8
Tafresh dozar,
43 x 6, dating to about 1900, from a
village about 100 km east of Hamadan, in western Iran.
The weave is much like that of village rugs from the
Hamadan area, with symmetric knots on a cotton
foundation, but knotcount is quite a bit higher. The
ascending design of birds within shrubs fits right
into Iranian design tradition, but this particular
pattern may be European-inspired. Very good color,
with a characteristic coral used for the border; in
excellent condition and complete. There are no guard
borders, which makes for a nice border/field
contrast.
