Sarouk and Sarouk-like Rugs
Sarouks, their coarser cousins, Sultanabads and Mahals, plus rugs from the adjoining Malayer district, were among the earliest export rugs and carpets from Iran. The trade began in about 1870, fired by the wealth of the Industrial Revolution in the West. The most common design was a medallion and spandrels layout that is taken from Quran covers. The four pieces shown here vary in knot density. All are in very good condition, complete, and date from from the period 1880-1910. Old Malayer rugs and carpets can be as finely woven as Sarouks, and the two weaves look very much alike; Malayers are woven with the symmetric knot while Sarouks are woven with the asymmetric.
