#9 Spanish carpet, workshop weaving, probably from the Government-controlled looms outside Madrid, from about 1925, 114" x 13' 3"; These soft-colored carpets usually have a lemon yellow cast, as here. Reflecting a 700 year Islamic tradition, this piece has an old Turkish repeat "bird" design in pale aubergine (see detail), dating from the 15th century and the appropriate accompanying border. Complete and in very good condition, with minimal repair. $12,000.
#10 Yezd carpet, workshop weaving from the city of Yezd, north of Kirman, in eastern Iran, 7' 9" x 11' 4", from about 1900. Yezd carpets look like Kirmans, but are often more dramatic, with larger forms and better color; they are not common. This piece is very gracefully drawn; the camel/gold guard borders provide a good counterpoint to the other colors. Complete and in good condition. Price quoted on request.
#11 Qarajeh carpet, village weaving from East Azarbayjan in northwestern Iran, probably from the village of Qarajeh, 104X136, from 1910-1920. This piece has strong clear colors and an unusual arrangement of elements, centered on a small central medallion. Most carpets of this type have large central medallions with pendants. Color balance in this piece is very good. The red field is uncommon for weavings from Qarajeh, which tend to be rust/orange. In very good condition.
View Rug#12
Donegal carpet, Irish workshop production, 8' 3" x 9' 6", from about 1910-20; this coarsely knotted European carpet, with its dark brown field, is woven with a French Savonnerie design, and has nice texture. Complete and in very good condition. Price quoted on request.
#13
Sarouk carpet, workshop weaving from the Arak area in western Iran, 10' 8" x 13' 11", from about 1890 or earlier. For more information on this type of carpet, see #2, this section of the site, as well as the Sarouk dozar section shown on the home page. This particular carpet has excellent drawing and color and is unusual in its large size. Most Sarouk carpets from this era are about 9' x 12". The carpet is in very good condition and is not brittle.
#14
Carpet from the small city of Ahar, in northern East Azarbayjan, in northwest Iran, 96 x 14, from about 1910-20. Old carpets from Ahar are densely knotted, with warps on two levels, and are more curvilinear than most village and town export weavings from East Azarbayjan. This example is more yellow red than later Ahar carpets, has a more dramatic border, a more open design, and a broad range of colors. The carpet is complete and in almost unused condition.
#15 Mahal carpet, workshop weaving from Arak in western Iran or from a nearby town, 75 x 911, from about 1910. The field design is fairly common for export carpets from the Arak area and has been used there from the 19th century up to modern times. Over this period, the design becomes stiffer, more crowded, with poorer color selection, in a manner not so different from that used as a measure of tribal weaving quality. This very good early piece - almost a Sultanabad - has great color and is complete and in very good condition.
#16 Sarapi Rug
"Sarapi" carpet, village weaving, probably from the town of Qarajeh in East Azarbayjan, in northwest Iran, dating to about 1900, or a bit earlier, 9'5" x 12'. This standard post WWI Heriz medallion design shows up, if rarely, on antique Azarbayjani carpets, and probably has textile antecedents. The light colors - not as a result of chemical washing - and the excellent condition make this carpet something you want to touch. If anthropomorphism lights your fire, there are two motives in the ivory field next to the medallion that look like clearly articulated dancing girls. See the detail images. Complete, excellent condition, a few non-intrusive reweaves on the margins.
