#5

Tabriz carpet, workshop weaving from that Azarbayjani city or its environs, 7’4” x 10’2”, from about 1925. The modified “Shah Abbas” pattern used here shows the sophistication of Tabrizi designers in the post-World War One period. The field color is derived from an insect-based dye. The border is a rendition of an older Kurdish/Azarbayjani one used on carpets and rugs sold into the domestic market. Carpets like this are the models for modern Indian and Pakistani knockoffs, only the knockoffs don’t have the same grace, color, wool quality and patina. Fairly finely knotted with symmetric knots, hand-spun wool, complete, and in very good condition.

#6
Tabriz carpet, workshop weaving from that Azarbayjani city or its environs, 8' 1" x 10'3", from about 1925. The sophisticated field and border patterns seen here are more common in finely knotted, less colorful Tabrizes, and give this piece a rare combination of rustic feeling, combined with urban, Safavid-style layered design. The structure, with good wool quality, long pile, and fairly low knot density, is more like a Heriz than typical Tabriz weaving. The squarish format is unusual. Complete and in very good condition.

#7

Heriz carpet, from one of the weaving villages in East Azarbayjan, in northwest Iran, 9’2” x 11’2” from about 1920; To be exceptional, as is this example, “Heriz” carpets depend on good yellows, greens, light blues, and a compatible range of up to four red dyes. They are not pale background rugs, are more like parrots. This piece is a dense, heavy carpet, almost like a Bijar. In very good condition.

#8
Mahal carpet, workshop weaving from the Arak area in western Iran, 7' x 10'6", from about 1925. This carpet has a "Mina Khani" repeat design which in the 18th - 19th century was used from Central Asia to Iran in a large variety of weaving formats. The design is more common in Kurdish rugs and carpets, and in carpets from Varamin, than in Mahals or Sarouks. There is a large variety of color in this piece. Wool quality is very good. Complete and in unworn good condition.
