Kirman dozar Rugs, 4'6" x 6'6" Format

Kirman, an old city in eastern Iran, was a textile producer until its weavers were put out of business by British mechanized looms. Fortunately, the "rug boom" in the late 19th century provided new employment. Early "Kirmans" have long had the reputation of being the best, most sophisticated export rugs Iran has produced. On the basis of dated examples, rugs from about 1880 to 1910 seem to represent a high point. The two pieces shown here are all finely woven, in very good condition, complete and rare, and all date from from the "high point" period. All early Kirmans use cochineal, an insect dye, for red tones.
