Tschebull Antique Carpets

Carpets in - roughly - 6’ x 9’ formats with overall designs

This format, quite useful for US and European living spaces, was apparently never turned out early on in sufficient numbers to meet Western demand, possibly because it was such an unnatural size for village weavers to produce. (For local use, they wove kellegi and kennereh; for most export customers, villagers wove 8’ x 10’ and larger carpets.) The 6' x 9' format is a bit awkward for a large pendant medallion design, so overall designs of some sort work best, but they are relatively rare. The more numerous 6' x 9' pendant medallion design carpets, especially Herizes, tend to be late, stiff and lifeless. Shown here are two pieces that were probably woven to metric specs. They are complete, early in the context of export weaving, in excellent condition, woven with hand-spun wool pile and natural dyes, with individualized designs, and very good looking.

The first carpet is probably from a small workshop in the Malayer district of western Iran, north of Hamadan, and is a country version of a city carpet. It has very good wool, saturated colors, original selvedges and warp finishes. It probably dates to about 1910.

The second carpet is a Heriz, from East Azarbayjan in NW Iran, also with original edge and end finishes and a very good balance of colors. Design scale is appropriate to the format.
